I have been interested in labyrinths since the change of the century (1999 to
2000). I searched for a labyrinth to walk to celebrate that New Year’s Eve and
was unable to find one. A labyrinth is NOT the same as a maze. Mazes are
left-brained puzzles to be solved. Usually, they are created out of hedges or
corn rows taller than a person’s head so you cannot see the end point. Mazes
have many paths that lead through twists and turns and dead ends, often
retracing your steps before reaching the center. A labyrinth is a single path,
right-brained meditation. It has twists and turns, and often looks like you are
going in the exact opposite direction of the center you are trying to reach. But
if you are willing to follow the path it will take you to the center and out
with no dead ends and no puzzles to solve. Usually a labyrinth is flat. No
hedges or hay bales blocking your view of the center and trapping you in the
puzzle, merely a design on the ground to be followed. If you decide the path is
not headed to your desired destination, you can walk off the labyrinth at any
point. This leads us to the first part of the name – ‘spiral’. A spiral is the
simplest form of a labyrinth, a single path to the center and out.
The second half of the name is ‘dragonfly’. Dragonflies represent metamorphosis.
They are symbols of good luck, positive change and courage. Courage is required
for someone to identify a dream and take action towards fulfilling that dream
especially while feeling overwhelmed at the changes already taking place in
their life. I work primarily with women who are going through life transitions.
They may be experiencing divorce, widowhood, empty nest, or the loss of a job or
parent. By finding a dream to move them out of transition and taking action
steps to fulfill that dream as they create a new exciting phase of their life,
they emerge from underwater, shedding their previous outer layer and revealing
unknown beautiful, brilliant colors of their personality. Just like a dragonfly.
